The Centrium Lion Dance

The building next to our serviced apartment is a huge office complex known as The Centrium. With the start of the new year Sino Group had a lion dance troupe brought in for the tenants to bring good fortune. This is the first time I saw one where the lion dances on top of a series of uneven poles.

As you can see, one is on the other's shoulders just to make it a bit more difficult. Watching them jump across the poles like this (and also in perfect time when not shoulder sitting) in time with the drums and cymbals makes you hold your breath. All sorts of moves were accomplished and the jumps and turns were amazing.

At one point another lion joined in.

Scrolls are unrolled and the company executives pose with the lions.

After one last pose, the lions enter the building and travel the floors to bring everyone who works there good fortune for the new year and I return to my apartment happy to have seen this dance and hoping some of the good fortune has rubbed off on me as well.

  1. Lovely shots!! This called the acrobatic lion dances.. so look out for the word acrobatic if you want to catch lion dancing on poles :D ... since this is the 15th day, the last day of CNY celebration, you'll have to come back here next year to catch more!! :p
