In between several of our tourist spots we made some stops to see local artisans at work (and be tempted by the shopping). One of the most interesting stops was at a jade factory. The completed pieces were intricately done and beautiful.
Another day we stopped at a silk factory where we saw everything from the worms and cocoons to the looms and ladies stretching layers of silk to make quilts.
We even got a chance to visit a doctor of Chinese medicine where we were treated to a foot massage. The massages were wonderful (and much needed by that time). The doctor merely takes your pulse and looks at your tongue for diagnosing purposes. She then recommends herbal supplements to help with any of your conditions. Although I believe there is some validity to this type of treatment, we refrained from becoming patients and stuck with the foot massages. The young man doing Ken's was quite impressed with his muscular legs. The Chinese have very thin legs and thighs and I think he was most impressed (he kept hitting his calf muscles really hard). We were both told that we were much younger than our years. After all of that touring, that was a relief to know.
