Po Hai

Our second evening in Beijing two Steelcase members joined us for dinner. Sim and Ida do not live in Beijing but travel there often and thus were the perfect guides.

We went to an area know as Po Hai which I think means Black River Park. It was after dark and very beautiful. There is a huge lake surrounded by shops and restaurants. The atmosphere has a disney-like quality to it.

We walked around the lake and marveled at the array of boats and the beautiful lights. As we reached the far side of the lake pictured above, we crossed a bridge and realized there was another section beyond where we were (the river section, I think). Each of the restaurants was unique and many of the shops sold hand made wares.

The large puffy balls are cotton candy. Each was the size of a beach ball. After strolling for a while, we chose a restaurant where we could eat al fresco and enjoy the beautiful evening. Sim and Ida took over ordering for the group. They decided to treat us to a culinary tour of China. We enjoyed dishes that were from Beijing as well as western and southern China. Some were from Sichuan and quite spicy while other dishes were sweet. We also voted on the desserts as to which was best. It was tough to find one to vote for (Grandpa Henry always said that dessert was never a high point in a Chinese meal).

The drinks were tasty as well as colorful. Following our feast we walked the remainder of the lake path and even saw a few familiar sights.

Can you say Starbucks in Chinese?

We left Po Hai with full stomachs and a better understanding of the many types of Chinese cuisine - or so we thought. There were many more surprises to come during the following days.
