Off to the New Territories

The Sunday after our return to Hong Kong we took our first trip to the New Territories on the Kowloon side. We met up with Rom from work and boarded a bus.

The busses in Hong Kong are mostly double deckers and it is fun to get a bird's eye view of the city.

We rode along the harbor for a while then through the long tunnel which brought us out into another coastal area. When we arrived at our destination we met with our hostess for the day, Vesper (also from Steelcase). She lives in an apartment that sits by the water and has great facilities. Ken, Rom and Vesper took turns hitting around a tennis ball. I don't have tennis shoes here so I took photos.

It was a very hot day. So after cleaning up we had some cool drinks and some Sticky rice that Vesper's mother made.

Sticky rice is just what it's name implies. A glutinous rice is wrapped around a variety of fillings and then wrapped in leaves for steaming and storage. Her mom makes great sticky rice. We tried two kinds.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to walk to town for dinner. All along the waterfront there is this great trail with walking, running and biking lanes.

It was about a 30 minute walk with the breeze off the water and the sun beginning to set. I understand why Vesper loves it there. Rom has recently joined Steelcase and just moved to Hong Kong. When his current lease is up, I would not be surprised if he looked to move to the New Territories. It's wonderful.

We went to a Chinese seafood restaurant for dinner. What else would you expect in that location? We let Rom and Vesper choose and we were not disappointed. We had Abalone and fish, some roast goose (a house specialty and delicious) and a soup that was rich and flavorful. When we went for seconds from the tureen, we found the secret to that rich broth...

...chicken feet. Vesper said that these were not so good to eat since the flavor had all been cooked out. Rom, however, found them just fine. The best and most beautiful dish of the day was a whole lobster on a bed of noodles and sauce.

It was yummy. Lots of moist lobster meat and the broth was excellent. Wonder if there were chicken feet in that one?

We finished our meal and prepared to return to Central. It was a fun day and for me the best part was making two new friends. We made plans for a repeat get together in a week and headed for home.
