Guangzhou By Night

Last week Ken had to be in Guangzhou for some training and to attend the Steelcase Guangzhou Annual Dinner. He started the week in Beijing so on Wednesday I travelled with our friend Rommel by train from Hong Kong to join him. It is a two hour train ride and an easy journey.

We arrived at the hotel around 7 PM and were joined by Ken and Sue for dinner and a look at the night lights of the city. Since Rom lived there for several years we had a great tour guide. The area we headed for was built for the 2010 Asian Games (similar to the Pan Am Games) and was definitely a showplace - starting with the restaurant.

Superb Canton Delicacy is a huge restaurant filled with private rooms to accommodate groups of any size. So the four of us had our own dining room. The most amazing feature of this restaurant is the art collection it houses. Each floor and area was filled with beautiful Chinese art.

Outside the doors was another feast for the eyes. The skyline of Guangzhou is architecturally beautiful and varied and lights are an important element in presenting these structures.

First there are the tall buildings that dominate the skyline.

Then there are the cultural buildings which are integrated onto the park area. The library is soaring.

The Opera House is very unique.

And the Guangdong Museum is almost eerie with it's lighting and enormous size.

The entire area runs for over a mile with trees, ponds and walking paths throughout. There is also a people mover underground to get from one area to another.

We also got a glimpse of a new Chinese made car, the Trumpchi.

And, of course, one of our favorites.

Walking around the area all of the office buildings have beautiful sculptures lining the roads which just adds to the beauty.

And all of this is dominated by the TV tower which is both functional and iconic.

All in all, we had a beautiful first glimpse of Guangzhou.
